How it's calculated
Add VAT: multiply the price before VAT by the rate. At 15%, VAT = net × 0.15 and the total = net + VAT.
Remove VAT: divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.15 to get the net price; the VAT is the difference. Taking 15% off the total is a common mistake: 15% of 1,150 is 172.50, but the VAT inside 1,150 is 150.
Rounding: the calculator works in whole halalas, rounds the VAT to 2 decimals (half up) and derives the other amount, so net + VAT always equals the total exactly.
Working out a final settlement too? The Saudi end-of-service calculator estimates the gratuity part, and the UAE VAT calculator handles prices at 5%.
Worked examples
- Add VAT to 200.00 SAR: 200.00 × 15% = 30.00 → 230.00 SAR
- Remove VAT from 575.00 SAR: 575.00 ÷ 1.15 = 500.00 net, VAT 75.00
- Small amounts round half up: 0.10 × 15% = 0.015 → 0.02, total 0.12 SAR
Standard-rated, zero-rated and exempt supplies
The 15% standard rate applies to most goods and services sold in Saudi Arabia. Some supplies are zero-rated (VAT applies at 0%, for example many exports) and some are exempt (no VAT is charged, for example most residential rent and certain financial services).
Which treatment applies depends on the VAT law and ZATCA guidance. This calculator only does the arithmetic for the rate you choose; it does not decide how a supply is taxed.
When did Saudi VAT become 15%?
Saudi Arabia introduced VAT at 5% on 1 January 2018 and raised the standard rate to 15% from 1 July 2020. For older invoices issued at 5%, switch on the custom rate and enter 5.
Prices shown to consumers
Prices shown to consumers in Saudi Arabia are generally expected to include VAT. Use “Remove VAT” to find the price before tax from a shelf or menu price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add 15% VAT to a price?
Multiply the price by 1.15. For example, 1,000 SAR becomes 1,150 SAR, of which 150 SAR is VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by 1.15. For 1,150 SAR the price before VAT is 1,000 SAR and the VAT is 150 SAR.
Why is the VAT not 15% of the total?
Because the total already contains the VAT. VAT is 15% of the net price, which equals about 13.04% of the VAT-inclusive total.
Does every product carry 15% VAT?
No. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt. Check ZATCA guidance for your case; the calculator does not decide the tax treatment.
Can I use a different rate?
Yes. Tick “Use a custom rate”, then enter any rate from 0 to 100%. The result is labelled as using a manual rate.
Is anything I enter sent or saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type leaves your device or appears in the address bar.
